Scoring
Each match winner is determined by the best of 3 traditional sets – the 3rd set can be played optionally as a tiebreaker in lieu of a full set if both players agree.
Standings (New Ranking System)
While we do keep track of the standings in a traditional win/loss record, we are going to use a new scoring method to determine your ranking. Each match that you win, you will earn 2 points. Each match lost will earn you 1 point. You will earn zero points for any un-played match.
Example – if player A ends the season with a record of 4-2 in a seven match schedule, he will have earned a total of 10 points. If player B ends the season with a record of 4-3, he would earn 11 points. Player B gets a bonus since he played all of his matches. This means that player B would earn a higher seed in the playoffs.
The bottom line is that we want all of our players to play all of their scheduled matches.
Playoffs
Playoff eligibility will be based on points earned at the end of the regular season.
The number of playoff participants will vary depending on how many players are in your division. Playoff draws can be made with 4,8, 12 or 16 players. If we have a tie in the standings, the tiebreaker is the head-to-head matchup from the regular season. If player A and B are tied for the last remaining playoff spot and player A defeated player B during the regular season then player A would hold the playoff tiebreaker. If player A never had an opportunity to play against player B during the regular season, then player A and B would play a “play-in” match to determine who goes to the playoffs.
Player Contact
Forfeit – if a match is scheduled and you do not show up at the designated time and place, it is a forfeited match. To avoid this from happening to you, you MUST place a phone call AND email to your opponent at least 4 hours prior to the match. If you opponent agrees, you can reschedule the match.
If you can provide documentation that you have tried to set up a match with an opponent several times but your opponent seems to be unavailable, we will allow you to enter a default for the match.
Reporting Match Results
After each match, the winning player will record the match score on the website. An email notification will automatically be sent to the losing player to confirm the score. If the score is not confirmed within 24 hours, the match result will be entered into the standings.
Court Issues
Home vs away – please follow the schedule closely. Each match someone will be designated home and away. You can be flexible with this but please communicate with your opponent.
Some courts require a court fee to play. Please let your opponent know if a court fee is involved. Players are responsible to pay their own court fee. There are plenty of “free, public” courts. If you need a list of said courts, please let us know.
Tennis Balls
It is expected that both players/teams bring a new unopened can of tennis balls for each league match. Open one can for use in the match. The winner of the match keeps the unopened can. If the match lasts 3 sets, you should open the 2nd can of balls for use in the 3rd set. If this is the case, then the winner of the match is not entitled to a new can of balls.
Sportsmanship
All players are expected to abide by the rule of tennis and practice good sportsmanship. Please click here to see the USTA tennis code http://assets.usta.com/assets/1/15/2011FAC-Kaufman.pdf
If your opponent does not use good sportsmanship in any way, please notify us. There is no room for poor sportsmanship in Broward Tennis and the violator(s) will not be allowed to register for future leagues.
